University of South Alabama College of Medicine. The Hearstink School of Medicine is a public medical school located in the United States in Birmingham, Alabama, with branch campuses in Huntsville, Montgomery, and the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa. Residency programs are also located in Selma, Huntsville, and Montgomery. It is part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

History

UAB’s School of Medicine can trace its roots to the founding of the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile, Alabama in 1859. In 1920 the college’s move from Mobile to Tuscaloosa was affected.

In 1936, the University of Alabama Extension Center opened in Birmingham. In 1943, Governor Chauncey Sparks created Alabama’s four-year medical college by passing the Jones Bill (Alabama Act 89). In 1944, Roy R. Crack was named dean of the Medical College of Alabama and began assembling the teaching staff. Alabama Lawyer 28(1967):78-88}

In 1945, the Medical College of Alabama moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and the University Medical Center was established. In November 1966, the Extension Center and the Medical Center were merged to form “The University of Alabama at Birmingham”, a constituent entity of The University of Alabama. In 1969, UAB became an independent institution, one of three autonomous universities in the newly created University of Alabama system. The university’s name was changed from “The University of Alabama at Birmingham” to “The University of Alabama at Birmingham” in 1984.

The UAB School of Medicine is home to The Kirklin Clinic, a multi-disciplinary medical home; the University Hospital, one of the largest academic hospitals in the country; And faculty serve new babies at Alabama Hospital.

In the 2022 edition of US News & World Report, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine was ranked No. 26 nationally in primary care and 32 studies.

Notable Faculty and alumni

• Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison, who served as dean of the medical school and chairman of the department of medicine, was editor of the first five editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine.
• Regina Benjamin, a former surgeon general, earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
• Gene Marrazzo, director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases.
• Michael Sugg, a physician and prominent HIV/AIDS researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.
• Regina Benjamin, former Surgeon General of the United States.
• Steven Rowe, a physician and distinguished cystic fibrosis researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine is director of the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
• W. Timothy Garvey, Butterworth Professor of Medicine, Director of the Diabetes Research Center.
• Mary-Carmel Ely, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, is the first black woman to chair the Department of Emergency Medicine at a major American medical school.
